Tengiz Shamiladze
Creative biography
Tengis Shamiladze was born in Batumi on 30 August 1948.
In 1966 he finished the secondary school and Batumi Zakaria Paliashvili Music School, Section of Pianoforte.
In 1972 he graduated Tbilisi Vano Sarajishvili State Conservatory, Faculty of Pianoforte.
Since 1966 he worked as a teacher of fortepiano and history of music at Music School 1.
Since 1974 he has been the Head of the Music Division of Batumi State Theatre of Drama. He has set compilations for about 120 plays and has written own music for 10 plays.
He has set compilation of the plays in Khulo, Ozurgeti, Poti, and Marjanishvili Theatres of Drama.
He has written own music for plays in Puppet Theatre for Youth.
On 6 August 1981 he was awarded the honorary award of Adjara Autonomous Republic for his productive and lengthy contribution to art.
From 1987, the establishment of Adjara TV, till 2007 he has worked as Music Editor on Adjara TV. Since 1990 – as Chief Editor of Music Programs, followed by Chief Producer’s position. During this period he shot and recorded all cultural events in Batumi and Adjara. He has shot folklore, classical, popular, and drama performances. He was the television director of these shootings.
During his television career, together with his colleagues he established women’s vocal trio, girls’ vocal quartet, and boys’ vocal quartet under guidance of Manana Chauzhba, his colleague. The songs performed by these groups were aired on Adjara television. They also made solo performances on behalf of Adjara TV.
In 1995, in association with his colleagues, Manana and Giorgi Chichua, he established children’s vocal studio Changi affiliated to the television, which later became the basis of State Opera and Ballet Theatre for Children, which is still under his management.
Studio Changi comprised of talented children who performed songs of various genres: popular and classical music.
In 2000, after one of the classical music concerts of Studio Changi in Batumi State Theatre of Drama, it was decided to form State Opera and Ballet Theater for Children, and Tengiz Shamiladze was appointed as its manager. In the meantime, he developed the project: opera performance Princess Turandot, and Manana Chaushba a vocal teacher and principal chorusmeister made a significant contribution to the performance. The play was directed by Gizo Zhordania, a famous Georgian director, actor, and Marjanishvili Award winner.
For successful performance of Princess Turandot Tengiz Shamiladze was awarded Memed Abashidze State Award on 9 November 2003.
In 2004 Batumi State Music Center was established and Music Center for Children and Youth affiliated to it, and since 2008 it has changed its name and is now called Youth Musical Theater whose art director is Tengiz Shamiladze.
The repertoire of Youth Musical Theatre is represented by various genres which is a rare case for such theatres.
The theatre repertoire:
- Classic opera Capuleti ei Montecci by V.Bellini, directed by Giorgi Tavadze, Marjanishvili Award winning director.
- Musical Notre Dame de Paris by R.Cocciante.
- Rock opera The Ballad of Tavparavneli by Mindia Khitarashvili based on the Tamaz Chiladze’s play.
Rock opera The Ballad of Tavparavneli was created on the basis of Tengiz Shamiladze’s play, the music was written by a local composer Mindia Khitarashvili, and directed by Giorgi Tavadze. The theatre also hosted Andrew Lloyd Webber’s popular rock opera Jesus Christ Superstar known as a theatrical concert, directed by Zaza Sikharulidze.
